ABOUT THE WORK

The latest addition to my mosaic assemblage series of iconic women reimagines Dorothy emerging from a rainbow with a basket of banned books, inspired by Banksy’s “Stop & Search 2007.” Ceramic figures around her quietly read their own banned books, forming a collective stand against censorship.

The piece also nods to the surprising history of The Wizard of Oz itself, which has been repeatedly challenged and banned for having too strong of a female character and witchery.

I collected vintage figurines and altered their book covers to reflect titles from the most-banned book lists. This duck, glancing over his shoulder, reads 1984 by George Orwell—a book challenged for its stark portrayal of a totalitarian regime.

This detail features a vintage Goebel figurine of Little Red Riding Hood, whose book I altered to the beloved Where the Wild Things Are by Maurice Sendak, a title often challenged for its depictions of children behaving in ways some adults found concerning.

She holds a lollipop as a nod to The Wizard of Oz’s Lollipop Guild, the whimsical trio who greet Dorothy in Munchkinland.

The SHIM Social Justice Network

Additionally, I’m excited to share that a print of my portrait “Jane” will be on display during Miami Art week at Aqua Fair in Booth 120 with the SHIM Social Justice Network.

The presentation features an exquisite corpse (collage) compiled from artists working in social justice curated by Amy Jackson.

Grant from Miami Dade County

I am delighted to have received a Miami-Dade County Individual Artist Grant for the funding year 2025-26. Thank you, Jane Thayer and Miami-Dade County Department of Cultural Affairs!

The Miami Individual Artists (MIA) Grants Program offers non-matching awards to individual artists of all disciplines in Miami-Dade County on a competitive basis, supporting their artistic development and practice.

Commission Pieces

This photo shows a commission piece I did for a recent client.

Alyssa asked me to reupholster her family’s piano chair using pieces of their broken blue-and-white china as a gift for her mother. After the mosaic seat was finished, she painted the chair a matching blue.

Before

After

The #1 question I get asked is… how long do these mixed media assemblages take? Well… months.

This has been a very busy year for my family. From fixing a cabin house with my partner Gregg to enjoying time with our amazing parents (in their 90's!) and our wonderful friends…

I am grateful for the blessings of 2025.

Best,
Stephanie Jaffe

P.S. I currently have limited availability for new commissions. If you'd like to collaborate on a custom piece, now’s the perfect time. Simply reply to this email for us to explore the possibility.
